Mythology
is the poetic expression of the collective unconscious and connects
man to the divine. Throughout the ages, artists of all genres,
shamans and mystical thinkers have created rich expressions of
the sacred for us to embrace and ponder.
The
archetypal images in mythology are representations of aspects
of our spiritual nature and our universe. Since the dawn of humanity,
mankind has looked to myth to explain the universe, our place
within it, both on an individual and community level. Existing
in cultures throughout the world, mythology incorporates psychology,
mysticism and magic as well as the cultural ideals it is reflecting.
Cultures
create mythology specifically for their needs and one suited to
their environment, however, there are underlying similarities
that most often connect mythologies -- comparable story themes,
pantheons of gods and goddesses and elemental forces are most
always present.
The
debate as to whether mythologies, being so startlingly similar
no matter the culture, migrated from one group of people to another(Diffusion
theory), or if these epiphanies sprung up spontaneously at the
same time(Parallelism theory), is still an open argument.
