The
Age of Chivalry and Romance was a time of castles, knights,
ladies and courtly love. These stories deal with the High
Middle Ages, the twelfth through fifteenth centuries in France,
Spain, Italy and Britain and were written for popular consumption.
The love of the noble lady stemmed from the worship of the
Virgin Mary in the forms of Queen of Heaven, Star of the Sea
and Rose of Sharon as seen not only through these stories
but also by the amazing Gothic churches of France that were
dedicated in her honor as they were being built.
The idea of romantic and courtly love resulted in the liberation
of upper class women from the view of sexual objects and property
to be owned. Because of this evolution and subsequent civilizing
of man, women were now exalted!
