THE MAGIC OF THE MOON PHASES

The eternal rhythm of the Moon exerts a powerful influence over Earth and all her creations. The phases of the Moon, along with the astrological signs she moves through, create a framework by which we can time our magical workings.

The major phases of the Moon are the New Moon, the Waxing Moon, the Full Moon, the Waning Moon and the Dark Moon. Right before the Waxing Moon, the powerful New Moon occurs -- and right before that is the Dark Moon, a very significant time, too.

One mythological association is:

Diana- the virgin on Earth, the huntress rules the time of the New and Waxing Moons. She is the protectress of animals and children.

Selene- the mother in the sky, she is the Full Moon.

Hecate- the wise crone who resides under the earth, the Waning and Dark Moons are her domain. The dark of the Moon is her time of greatest power.

New Moon- this magical moment can be felt as the dark gives way to the light. The New Moon lasts only an instant but her influence can be felt through the entire Waxing period. It is a time of new beginnings and the next two weeks can be seen as a time of nourishment, growth, and rebirth. It is a time to start new projects, expand new ideas and thoughts and to direct them outward. This is the time for magical work that involves drawing and attracting and is characterized by a quick flow of energy. Plant the seeds for your next great working!

Waxing Moon- this is the two week period between the New Moon and the Full Moon. It is a growing period -- a time to work on manifesting the goals you set on the New Moon and to attract and draw what you need to make it happen!

Full Moon- this is most always an emotional time for people as feelings become more intense. ĘThough she lasts only a moment, the Full Moon period extends before and after the actual time. "Drawing down the Moon" is a Full Moon ritual for linking the Moon's energy and power with the Earth and ourselves. It's about manifestation on Earth -- the seeds planted reach fruition at this time. Give thanks for what you have received.

The Waning Moon- this is the two week period between the Full Moon and the Dark Moon. This is a time of introspection, Ęto turn inward, to banish, release, to selectively discard and to let things germinate. This can be a low energy time for people. Throw things away and release and banish bad habits and unhealthy situations during the Waning Moon.

The Dark Moon- lasting only a moment, it is a great time for closure -- for bringing things full circle before the New Moon.

Void Moons- as the Moon moves through each sign of the zodiac, she makes aspects to other planets. She is called void-of-course when she has completed all the aspects she can within that sign, but has not yet entered the next. These passages can last anywhere from hours to a day or two. During a void-of-course Moon, things are in neutral so the gears can shift into the next sign, making it a time to kick back and relax. Many believe that magical workings done at this time produce false starts and errors -- that you shouldn't start anything you want to have long-lasting, concrete and tangible effects. However, as the void Moon is about the unconscious mind and unconscious tasks, it is a very good time for astral projection, trancework, meditation, divination and other mental workings.
